Brooklyn Brewery: Sorachi Ace

Brooklyn Brewery: Sorachi Ace

Brooklyn Brewery, located in wonderfully gentrified Williamsburg, offers a wide range of brews. Flagship beers found in any respectable to-go shop sit on the shelf next to their rarer, specialty cousins from their big bottle and brewer’s reserve series. One such beer, a member of the brewer’s reserve series, is the hoppy saison, Sorachi Ace. Most often found bottle-conditioned in a 750ml corked bottle, Sorachi Ace is a unique farmhouse style ale that utilizes a Japanese hop variety, from which it gets its name, sourced from a single farm in Oregon.

After the satisfying pop of the cork, a quick whiff of the bottle emits a crisp, grassy scent. Poured slowly from the 750ml bottle, Sorachi Ace has a clear, golden color with a foamy white head and a visible level of carbonation dancing in the glass. Upon tasting the first sip, the crisp, grassy notes found in the nose are present once again, this time accompanied by a refreshing lemony bite. Each sip finishes dry and refreshing with a little hint of lemon zest creating a light bodied flavor. Despite a rather strong alcohol content for a saison, Sorachi Ace gives no impression of its strength as it is very light and easy drinking.

Sorachi Ace is a great, unique brew for the summer weather. Light, fresh tastes supported by a lemon zest finish makes for a very refreshing beer. Someone interested in light bodied beers but not yet accustomed to spices found in traditional farmhouse brews may enjoy Sorachi Ace. Available in corked 750ml bottles, it can be found among other larger-format Brooklyn beers at most craft beer stores and bars.
