The Hudson House: Long Beach Island
The Hudson House is the definition of a true shore bar. Located in an old house with a sign that simply reads, “BAR,” the “Hud,” as locals call it, is located unsuspectingly among a row of other houses on East 13th Street in Beach Haven. Step inside, and you immediately feel as if you’re living in a simpler time. Although the age of the building is unknown, the Hudson House bar has been around since at least the early 1960s, and the feel remains the same today. The walls are lined with old beer signs and shore artifacts, and throughout the bar you’ll find a pool table, a shuffleboard table, and even a pinball machine. Most importantly, in the center of it all, is a well-stocked bar.
The Hudson House offers everything from craft beers, such as Brooklyn and Flying Fish, to Miller Lite and Pabst Blue Ribbon. Of course, there is plenty of liquor on hand, too, and also plenty of friendly people. Although they are not known for having a happy hour, a beer at the Hudson House will only cost you around $3.00 or $5.00, still making it one of Long Beach Island’s most affordable bars. At the end of the summer season (from the end of August into October), the Hudson House often has a beer month, making their beers even cheaper. Being as old as it is, the Hudson House is grandfathered in to many laws and regulations that other bars in the area do not enjoy the privilege of having. For example, if you’re in the area on New Years Eve, a visit to the Hudson House is a must. It’s the only bar on the island that is open until 6am that night!
Stop by the Hudson House on any night of the week and you’ll be sure to make a few new friends. Be sure to bring cash, because, true to their old-school style, the Hudson House doesn’t accept credit cards. If you’re looking for a laid back, but lively atmosphere, the Hud is the place to be.
