Home Brew at the White House

Home Brew at the White House

This past Superbowl Sunday, White House Super Bowl guests were served a special treat in the form of a home brew. According to White House food blogger Obama Foodorama, the home brew was concocted by one of the White House’s own chefs. The “White House Honey Ale” was made using a set of home brewing equipment purchased by the first family, and a portion of the honey harvested from the South Lawn’s own private bee reserve (yes, that place even has it’s own bee’s hive).

The beverages didn’t stop at home brews, though, and it’s apparent that White House hosts weren’t playing favorites for the big game. They also chose beers to represent each team’s region to oblige guests with. From Green Bay Wisconsin, Hinterland Brewery’s signature Pale Ale, Amber Ale and Luna stout were served. Representing Pittsburgh was beer from America’s oldest brewery, Yuengling (we know, Pottsville isn’t exactly close to Pittsburgh).

Traditional Wisconsin and Pennsylvanian food was also chosen to represent the two football teams, including football regulars. Cuisine served included; Bratwurst, Kielbasa, cheeseburgers, Buffalo Wings (thank God), twice baked potatoes, chips and pretzels from Snyders, salad, ice cream and potato salad.

Aside from the first family, cabinet members, and senators in attendance at the gathering, the invite was extended to a couple celebrity guests. So, who got to gorge themselves on football comfort foods, craft beer and a special home brew, all prepared by the White House’s finest, at the commander and chief’s own abode? Who did Obama himself find befitting of such an honor? Jennifer Lopez…and husband Marc Anthony.
