Guinness Reigns Supreme on St. Patrick's Day, According to Untappd

Settling on a beer for St. Patrick’s Day is always a tough choice. With green beer flowing from every dive off the boardwalk, finding alternatives that pay homage to the holiday but are still tasty can be tough, but according to Untappd, drinkers all across South Jersey are finding their own ways to celebrate.

Untappd is considered one of the country’s premier domestic and craft beer apps for beer lovers. Users check into the app, recording what beers their drinking at what bar. They can also rate the beers they’ve drank, give reviews, and chat back and forth with drinkers and brewers across the country, all through one social media site.

Untappd co-found Greg Avola crunched the numbers for Drink NJ Shore to find out what beers beach goers were drinking on St. Patrick’s Day in 2015 along 50 miles of South Jersey bars. Here are the top 10:

1. Guinness Draught by Guinness
2. Grapefruit Sculpin by Ballast Point Brewing & Spirits
3. Smithwick's by Guinness
4. Harp Premium Lager by Guinness
5. Guinness Blonde American Lager by Guinness
6. Boat Beer by Carton Brewing Company
8. Hop Hunter IPA by Sierra Nevada Brewing Co.
9. Milk Stout Nitro by Left Hand Brewing Company
10. Samuel Adams Cold Snap by Boston Beer Company (Samuel Adams)

Guinness, of course, was the star of the day, making up 40 percent of check-ins in South Jersey on March 17, 2015. Carton fans managed to make themselves known-- as they always do-- and also give local beers a bit of a bump in numbers, which seems only fitting, as Carton owner Augie Carton is extremely active on Untappd himself. 077XX and Boat Beer were just a few of the hoppy beers that made up almost half of the top 10 list, proving that you don’t need just thick stouts and porters to celebrate St. Pat’s. But drinkers looking to stick with tradition were also mixing up their stouts with Left Hand’s Milk Stout Nitro. Meanwhile, Grapefruit Sculpin’s surprising popularity shows that some people are just ready to skip the holiday entirely and jump right into summer.

If you’re looking to get started on Untappd, St. Patrick’s Day is the day to do it. According to Avola’s numbers, Untappd sees a major spike in usage on March 17, compared to other dates during that week. On St. Patrick’s Day in 2015, users were logging in at a massive rate of 3,500 check-ins per hour, and that was just for Guinness alone. Avola says that number for Guinness is almost seven times as much as average.
