7 Spirits Made With Hops: An Unlikely but Trendy Match |
4) Hatter Royale Hopquila
80 Proof; $35
Despite its name, New Holland Brewing’s Hatter Royale Hopquila is NOT a tequila, but instead a hopped whiskey made by slowly fermenting malted barley then distilling it twice. Unlike the other spirits mentioned, New Holland adds hops post-distillation, which allows distillers to leverage the hops natural oils. American Centennial Hops are used, which gives the whiskey the classic flavor notes of pungent, citrus and floral with a slightly bitter yet malty edge. The end result is a whiskey that tastes surprisingly like tequila, hence the name.
