Velvet Whip: Inside Look at the New Mixed Arts Speakeasy & Performance Space

Tucked away in the Eraserhood, a stone’s throw from Vox Popoli Gallery and The Trestle Inn, lies Philadelphia’s newest addition to the late-night arts scene, Velvet Whip. This once hidden gem has opened to the public, and is where cocktails and creativity meet.

Moody lighting and vintage decor lend a sexy, mysterious vibe to a venue clearly born of an artist’s heart. That artist is founder Echo, a classically trained opera singer and fine artist that opened the club as a BYO in 2023, and then later a full bar in April 2025. She has a BFA from the Philadelphia Academy of Fine Arts and a MFA from the New York Academy of Art. Echo says about the space:

"Velvet Whip was built with my simple vision to create an unconditional sanctuary where we lay down society’s burdens and uplift life experience through candor conversations, celebration of individuality, and the shared joy of art across genres with all."

Ornate chandeliers and retro couches span from stage to bar, where mixologist Nader Hanna's cocktail menu shines.

“A cocktail at Velvet Whip isn’t just a drink,” says Hanna, “it’s an invitation—to slow down, to taste, to listen. Each drink is built to match the energy of the space and to bring people into conversation. The goal is connection, not just consumption.”

Hanna took inspiration from the venue itself to develop the menu to craft libations that are smoky yet smooth, modern yet classic, light yet bold.

Drink highlights include the Smoking Bandit, a unique blend of cucumber-infused mezcal with hints of blueberry and citrus, and finished with ginger beer.

Wake Up Call (coconut rum, espresso, white chocolate liqueur, coffee liqueur, patron coffee tequila) - Photo by Drink Philly

The Wake Up Call packs a decadent jolt with coconut rum, espresso, white chocolate, and coffee liqueur are blended into a cocktail that is both bold and smooth.

Cotton Candy Crash (blueberry cotton candy margarita) - Photo by Drink Philly

Another menu standout is the Cotton Candy Crash–a bright, boozy blueberry twist on a classic margarita.

Beyond cocktails, Velvet Whip aims to be a hub for Philly’s vibrant arts community. Previously a member’s only speakeasy, it has recently opened to the public with an event calendar featuring an eclectic mix of live blues and jazz, comedy, burlesque, theater, and open mic nights.

As a venue, Velvet Whip offers a curated lineup that spans genres. As a community space, it supports known and emerging artists and encourages audiences to open themselves up to new cultural experiences.

Membership comes in three tiers, giving guests the chance to attend exclusive shows and receive discounts on venue rentals. Tuesdays, Wednesday, and Thursdays are open to non-members that want to preview the space before joining. Live performances start as early as 6:30 PM, making it the perfect after-work spot. Happy Hour runs 6 PM - 8 PM Tuesday - Thursday, and 10 PM - Midnight Friday and Saturday.

In true speakeasy fashion, their complete address is unlisted, so be sure to check the calendar and RSVP to the evening’s programming before you visit.
