Brooklyn’s New York Distilling Company partnered with spirits expert David Wondrich to develop a classic but unique gin that is flavored with both juniper and hops. Chief Gowanus, which will be released in September, is a contemporary take on the Netherland-based spirit Genever (a close relative to gin) and uses a 1809 distilling manual recipe found by Wondrich as a starting point.
The unique recipe uses American rye whiskey distilled from New York State grains and includes a third distillation in a pot still with juniper berries and Cluster hops (the most likely kind to have been available in the 19th century). The spirit is then aged three months in oak barrels, resulting in a smooth, whiskey-gin hybrid that has flavors of spicy vanilla from the rye and citrus-juniper aromas from the botanicals.
