Wine News: A Global Cellar, White Castle Pairings, Mass Uncorking

Global Cellar – Eric Weisinger, an Oregon winemaker, has an unconventional cellar: planet Earth. The globe-trotting 43-year-old selects his best vintages and stashes them in the ground at carefully chosen spots around the world. Each is placed at a spot that Weisinger would enjoy coming back to, such as the site of his first impromptu burial on California’s Grizzly Peak, or deep in the jungle of Belize, and he tries to note the spot using GPS coordinates. However, the buried treasure is anyone’s game, and as he wraps each bottle in plastic he includes a note: “When found, please enjoy! Eric Weisinger.” [Spokesman Review]

Majestic Fast Food Pairing
– The miniature burgers at White Castle – sliders before sliders were cool – have a strong cult following, and in Layfayette, IN, devotees of these bite-size buns can now pair them with something stronger than soda. The small bottles, which include a merlot, chardonnay and moscato, are carried to the table (as required by law) and poured into plastic cups for patrons to enjoy as they munch. Will the trend spread beyond this one store and into other franchisees? Time will tell. [Wall Street Journal]

Pop Goes the Record
– How many bottles does a sommelier open in his or her life? Perhaps not more than the Guinness Record-breaking simultaneous uncorking that went down on February 29 in Las Vegas. With participants ranging from chef Jose Andres to Bon Appetit editor-in-chief Adam Rapoport, a group of aficionados gathered by the gushing Bellagio pool to successfully pop 308 corks at the same time. The stunt was a promo for the May 10–13 Uncork’d food and wine event. We just want to know, who got to drink the results? [Las Vegas Review-Journal]
