Space Beer is Finally Here!
Students at Queensland University of Technology in Australia are currently testing beer that will be safe for consumption in space. That’s right, folks, apparently some people are of the idea that operating a 2,000 ton spacecraft inebriated is perfectly reasonable.
Making beer suitable for space is no joke, however (and to be clear, there currently is a no alcohol policy in place). The tongue swells in space, so it is important that the “space beer” have a lower carbonation. This, of course, leads to what can only be described as a lame head, which is something researchers are currently working on. The effects of too much carbonation in space could also potentially lead to vomiting. Flavors of foods and beverages in space are also dulled significantly so the flavors of this particular beer, entitled the Vostok 4 Pines Stout Space Beer (imagine trying to order that five beers in), have been strengthened.
In order to simulate space, researchers are using a microgravity “drop tower” to test their brew. Recently, the beer was also tested and given approval by an astronaut-for-hire drank six of the 150ml beers in a 747 that dropped quickly enough to produce weightlessness. Measuring in at 5.1% ABV, the Space Beer will take place in the Australian and International Beer Awards this week.
