Bulleit Is Releasing a Barrel Proof Bourbon

by Alexander Frane on Apr 13, 2016 in Liquor

Fans of Bulleit Bourbon who like a stronger whiskey are in luck — Bulleit is releasing a barrel proof version of their whiskey, at least to shops in Kentucky.

Bulleit Bourbon is one of Diageo’s fastest growing and most popular products. It makes sense that the company would release a barrel proof bourbon, as plenty of bartenders and consumers are turning towards higher strength spirits, which stand up better to ingredients in a cocktail.

For those who don’t want to mix it, barrel proof whiskey is a great way to taste the more nuanced flavors of Bulleit, neat or with a bit of ice. Normally, whiskeys get watered down between the barrel and the bottle to make a more precise, lighter proof, but barrel proof specifically refers to transferring the contents of the barrel straight into the bottle with just some filtration to remove char. This allows Bulleit Bourbon’s heavy rye mash to come forward, expressing the natural flavors of fruit, caramel, butterscotch, and cinnamon.

For now, the barrel proof version of Bulleit is only available in Kentucky, at a price point of $49.99 for a 750 milliliter bottle. It’s possible we’ll be seeing wider distribution soon, especially after Diageo finishes production of its $115 million Bulleit distillery. The spirits are currently distilled at Four Roses Distillery. Likewise, we might be seeing a barrel proof Bulleit Rye as well, which is most likely dependent on sales of the barrel proof bourbon.
