Where to Find DC's Best Boozy Milkshakes and Frozen Drinks

The summer months are upon us. What does that mean for you? Unbearable heat, humidity and constant sweating. What else does that mean for you? All the boozy milkshakes and alcoholic frozen drinks you can handle. Your favorite childhood summertime treats just got so much more appealing. Here are some of our favorite frozen treats.
Most famous for its “Crunchburger,” Bobby Flay’s burger chain is also home to three spiked milkshakes: Vanilla Caramel Bourbon, Pineapple Coconut Rum and Mocha Kahlua Vodka. We won’t judge if you order all three in one sitting. (2121 K St., NW; 202-974-6260)
Like ketchup and hot dogs, burgers and shakes were made for one another. Head to Foggy Bottom for signature BTS burgers and “Shaketails.” Ever wondered what Fireball in a milkshake would taste like? Order the Apocalypto and find out (Fireball, homemade marshmallows, chocolate ice cream). Other notable milkshake combinations include a Firefly Sweet Tea Vodka and limoncello concoction and root beer float made with Smirnoff Root Beer Vodka. (2200 Pennsylvania Ave., NW; 202-587-6258)
Cool down with Cuba Libre’s frozen spin on classic drinks. Try the Frozen Mojito (made with lime, Cuban mint and Cuba Libre White rum) or the Frozen Red Sangria, each for $10. (801 9th St., NW; 202-408-1600)
Head to the rooftop of The Donovan for the Chou Chou, an ice pop made of kahlua dark rum, varnelli mocha liqueur and house-made tonic. (1155 14th St., NW; 202-737-1200)
Summer in DC = slushies at Eat the Rich. Pair your local oysters and seafood with the current slushie Ghost in the Fruit Machine: Green Hat spring/summer gin, campari, sweet vermouth, Cheerwine shrub and coffee. (1839 7th St., NW; 202-316-9396)
The classier version of a spiked Slurpee, the popular slushitos at Estadio serve as a refreshing antidote to the long summer days. Current flavors include cucumber, white pepper manzanilla, gin and basil or Campari, sweet vermouth, honey, rye and lime. (1520 14th St., NW; 202-319-1404)
Head to the Baltimore brewery’s Arlington location for boozy beer floats. What else would you expect from an Alehouse? Choose from the Peg Leg Float, Oud Beersel Lambic Float or the Kriek Lambic Float. (1501 Wilson Blvd., VA; 703879-4388)
Pretend you’re on an island getaway with one of Mio’s Piraguas: Puerto Rican shaved ice with fresh fruit syrup, topped with a shot of rum. Choose from five flavors including acerola, mango, guava, coconut and the signature Puerto Rican coffee. The best part? You get to place your order at a decorative cart on Mio’s patio. (1110 Vermont Ave., NW; 202-955-0075)
The preferred watering hole for concert-goers catching a show at the 9:30 Club, the Satellite Room has six different boozy milkshakes on the menu for $10 each. Try the Vincent Vega with vanilla ice cream and Bulleit bourbon or the Frank Costello with chocolate mint ice cream and Irish whiskey. (2047 9th St., NW; 202506-2496)

Ted’s Bulletin

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you know Ted’s Bulletin is the place to go for adult milkshakes. Try them in a variety of flavors including toasted coconut (with coconut rum), grasshopper (with Kahlua and crème de menthe) or the nutty professor (hazelnut liqueur). Take things up a notch and order the Millionaire Malt made with Glenlivet 18 year scotch. (505 8th St., SE; 202-544-8337)
