Mouton Noir Wines Founder Spoofs the Gastronomic World With a Coloring and Activity Book

by Jenny Miller on Jun 2, 2014 in Culture

André Hueston Mack is the kind of guy who makes the rest of us look bad.

When his successful finance career began to pale in comparison to his passion for wine, Mack left his desk job behind — and got himself hired as Per Se's head sommelier a few years later.

Later Mack moved beyond somm gigs to found Mouton Noir Wines, a cultishly beloved label out of Oregon's Willamette Valley (if you haven't tried it, do give their fruit-forward "Oregogne" Pinot Noir a swirl).

And this year, Mack turned his attention to another of his talents — illustration and graphic design — to create Small Thyme Cooks, an activity and coloring book that spoofs famous folks from the gastronomic world.

In Volume 1, which came out earlier this month, there's an Anthony Bourdain shrooms word search ("portobello, "porcini," etc), connect the dots with Daniel Boulud, and a Champagne toast to Charlie Trotter — whose foundation offering scholarships to culinarily minded young folks receives part of the proceeds from each book. Plus, nods to Eric Ripert, Tom Colicchio, and other greats. We can hardly wait to see Volume 2.
