Must-Try Cocktail Bars in 8 Philadelphia Neighborhoods

A few years ago The Franklin Mortgage & Investment Co. was one of the few refuges for the Philadelphia cocktail aficionado, but now restaurants all over town are putting together serious bar programs, and other bars are stepping up the mixed drink game. Check out must-try spots to hit up in eight Philly neighborhoods.

Rittenhouse — Vernick: In addition to acclaimed food, Gregory Vernick’s newcomer has some serious talent behind the bar. Enjoy the classic Martinez (the original martini) or try some smoky mezcal in the Century 72 (2031 Walnut St.; ).

Wash West — Vedge: Who knew vegans were such great drinkers? Rich Landau and Kate Jacoby’s restaurant features a large bar, a cozy lounge and affordable, well-made cocktails at happy hour — check out the rotating selection of specials focusing on seasonality that will run you just $6 each (1221 Locust St.; ).

Fairmount —
Lemon Hill: The seriously great cocktail program here was spearheaded by The Franklin Mortgage & Investment Co.’s Al Sotack. Enjoy $7 craft cocktails during happy hour, or try the Fernet Branca on tap (747 N. 25th St.; ).

Queen Village —
Southwark: This is one of the best places to go get a traditional martini, Old Fashioned or just about any classic cocktail. Somehow it flies under the radar, so check it out late night and make it your new secret spot (701 S. 4th St.; ).

Chinatown — Hop Sing Laundromat: Don't be intimidated by this much-discussed cocktail bar on Race Street. Put on your Sunday best and head over for a one-of-a-kind experience. Many a convert has emerged from the gates once they've sipped on one (or two or three) of the expertly prepared cocktails here (1029 Race St.; ).

Society Hill —
Zahav: The cocktail menu at Michael Solomonov’s modern Israeli features several unique combinations, and they all work wonderfully. Think celery root soda with rye, or a drink concocted with housemade pepper-infused whiskey (237 St. James Pl.; ).

Northern Liberties — Emmanuelle: With expert bartenders Phoebe Esmon and Christian Gaal behind the stick, you can't go wrong with the bartender's choice at this new cocktail parlor (1052 N. Hancock St.; ).

Fishtown — Lloyd: Venture out to East Girard to find nicely-priced whiskey specials using both popular and hard-to-find brands. The mixed drinks are equally well handled (529 E. Girard Ave.; ).
