Dispatch from CES: New LG Fridge Chills Beer in Record Time

The 2012 Consumer Electronics Show is in full swing, and there’s good news from Las Vegas for last-minute beer and wine shoppers. Appliance maker LG showed off their new top-of-the-line refrigerator, and one of the major selling points is its built-in Blast Chiller.
This little section of the icebox is designed to take a room-temperature can of beer and cool it down to a thirst-quenching 42-degrees Farenheit in as little as 5 minutes (your wait time is just 8 minutes for two cans or a bottle of wine).
The chilling magic works by siphoning cold air from the freezer and shooting it over the beverage at enormous speeds, similar to those achieved by jet propulsion engines. As the cold air whooshes by, the cans or bottles are gently rocked in place, swirling the liquid and keeping ice crystals from forming.
No word on whether you’ll be able to pick up a stand-alone Blast Chiller anytime soon (the fridge costs several thousand dollars), but the device has already won a CES “Best of Innovations” award, so you can be sure LG is considering it.
